Maxwell, Did you forget already that Curlin bypassed Cigar last year in graded earnings.
I believe the Breeder's Cup is the richest graded earnings race.

The Breeders Cup Classic is the richest horse race in the US. The purse is $5 million. The Kentucky Derby purse is only $2 million. The world's richest race is the Dubai World Cup.
Now to correct some misstatements in other answers. First, Cigar was the richest racehorse in the US until last year when he was passed by Curlin. Second, Cigar was not able to reproduce, so he doesn't get stud fees… he lives at Kentucky Horse Park in the hall of champions and many people visit him every year. Third, Curlin didn't win the Breeders Cup Classic last year… he won the race in 2007, but the synthetic surface was his downfall last year making him finish 4th to Ravens Pass, Henrythenavigator, and Tiago.
